Preparing Your Dog for a New Baby: Training Tips & Common Challenges

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most exciting—and life-changing—times in your life. But if you have a dog at home, you’re not the only one who’s going to experience a big adjustment.

Dogs thrive on routine, attention, and familiarity—so a sudden change in their environment, smells, sounds, and your availability can be confusing, overwhelming, or even stressful.

The good news? With a bit of preparation and training, you can help your dog adapt smoothly and set everyone up for success when the baby comes home.

Why Prepare Your Dog Before the Baby Arrives?

It’s natural for your attention to shift when a baby is born. You’ll have less time, a new routine, and new priorities. Your dog may not understand what’s happening—and that can lead to unwanted behaviours like:

  • Barking or whining when the baby cries
  • Jumping up when you’re holding the baby
  • Anxiety due to a change in routine
  • Attention-seeking or destructive behaviours
  • Overexcitement or confusion around baby gear
  • Potential resource guarding if not managed early

By preparing early, you can prevent issues before they start and help your dog feel calm, confident, and safe in this new chapter.

Step 1: Assess & Strengthen Basic Training

Before the baby arrives, check that your dog has reliable versions of these key behaviours:

✋ Settle on Cue – Teach your dog to go to a mat or bed and settle when asked. This is perfect for feeding, changing, or calming the baby without your dog crowding the space.

🚫 Leave It / Drop It – Useful for when baby toys (or nappies!) are on the floor and your curious pup wants to investigate.

👂 Response to Name – Your dog should respond to their name even when distracted—this helps redirect their attention quickly when needed at home or out and about.

🪑 Polite Greetings  – If your dog jumps up on people, now’s the time to work on calm hellos. You’ll want your hands free when holding your newborn!

Step 2: Introduce Baby-Related Changes Early

Help your dog get used to the idea of a baby before one even arrives.

🧸 Desensitise to Baby Sounds – Play recordings of baby cries, gurgles, and laughter at low volumes. Pair the sounds with treats or meals to create positive associations.

🪑 Set Up Baby Gear Gradually – Let your dog investigate prams, cots, swings, and toys at their own pace. Reward calm behaviour around new items.

⏰ Adjust Your Dog’s Routine – Begin shifting walks, feeding, and play times closer to what they’ll look like post-baby. Gradual changes help avoid shock or anxiety.

💨 Work on Being Calm During Chaos – Practice calm behaviours while you move around the house, talk to a doll (yes, really!), or simulate distractions. Build your dog’s ability to cope with busy environments calmly.

Step 3: Create Safe Spaces for Everyone

Your dog will need a quiet place to retreat when the baby cries, visitors arrive, or they simply want space.

  • Use a crate, pen, or gated area with their bed and toys
  • Train a solid “bed” or “settle” cue
  • Let them rest undisturbed—this is especially important once your baby becomes mobile

Likewise, set up baby-only spaces that are dog-free to avoid overstimulation or risk to either party.

Step 4: The First Meeting – Bringing Baby Home

When the big day comes, keep the introduction calm and pressure-free.

  • Let someone else greet your dog first after any time apart (to burn off excitement)
  • Allow your dog to see and sniff the baby from a safe distance
  • Don’t force interaction—follow your dog’s pace
  • Praise calm, curious behaviour

Even if your dog seems unsure at first, it’s okay. Keep things positive, short, and low-pressure.

When to Get Help

If your dog has shown:

  • Aggression around children or toys
  • High anxiety or attachment to one person
  • Resource guarding or reactivity

It’s a good idea to consult a professional trainer or behaviourist well before the baby arrives. Early intervention can make all the difference. Contact us if you feel your dog is struggling with these behaviours – beth@barkingbuds.co.uk
